One of the most common questions we are asked as designers is how to slowly transition away from the classic farmhouse aesthetic to a more timely and arguably timeless California casual design style. In order to evolve, it is important to understand the differences, albeit subtle, between the two design styles.
About 10 years ago, farmhouse style started becoming a huge decorating trend, thanks in large part to Joanna Gaines and HGTV's Fixer Upper. This style was laden with shiplap, cotton stems, chippy painted furniture, olive trees, wooden signs with words, black & white buffalo check, olive buckets, and windmill wall decor - the pieces that the design world has transitioned away from.
There are, however, many great pieces of farmhouse style that have carried over into California casual design, including neutral color palettes, vintage accents, subway tile, exposed beams, and layers of casual cozy rugs, pillows, and blankets. In order to update your space, try swapping out the following for a more in vogue aesthetic.
